Given the nature of the hospitality industry, the design of the Pension Bertolini will necessarily involve a rich profusion of visually appealing and tactile materials. To focus solely on sight and touch, however, would be to limit the translatory potential of the hotel’s materiality. Room is not only a sensual novel, but a sensory novel. Forster was well aware—through instinct, if not through scientific knowledge—of the impact that physical sensations have on emotions and memory. As an argument for elevating intuition to the standing of reason, Room is peppered with sensorily descriptive passages, ripe for translation through haptic design.
